How is Mesothelioma Acquired?

Mesothelioma is absolutely one of the deadliest forms of cancers ever known to man. People afflicted with the disease would surely eventually die within usually up to three years after the diagnosis. Some only live out to take a few more months after determination of the presence of the disease.

Not all people would easily acquire the condition. There is significant feature of the disease. Mesothelioma is composed of malignant and cancerous cells that accumulate in the mesothelium. And the malignant cells would not occur without direct exposure to and accumulation of a radioactive and metamorphic basic element called asbestos.

Through the years, people all over the world surely have been familiarized with the term ‘asbestos inhalation and exposure’. Through the years, the construction and manufacturing sectors have actively used the element in various developments and products. That is because asbestos has been known to exude insulation characteristics.

Asbestos is known to be a great resistant and insulator to electricity and more importantly, heat. Its flame resistant feature makes it really ideal for construction of homes and buildings. In the past, many walls and interiors of buildings all over the world have been surrounded with asbestos. But when studies and researches confirmed that the element causes a deadly cancer called mesothelioma, the usage has been abandoned and structures containing asbestos have been modified.

Asbestos naturally are fibrous despite its very solid appearance. What is worse is that the element is like radioactive substances that naturally degenerate when exposed to open air. During that degeneration process, the very tiny and almost invisible fibers of asbestos goes into the air. When an enclosed area like a room or a building is filled with asbestos fibers in the air, it is inevitable that people inside would unknowingly inhale the substances.

Once inhaled, the asbestos fibers go directly to the internal organs and accumulate in the mesothelium. There are no indications and symptoms of the inhalation and the accumulation process. But the asbestos fibers would stay there without the person having even the slightest clue until about 20 to at most 50 years, when the fibers finally mess up with the mesothelium and begin the production of malignant cells.

Thus, when symptoms of mesothelioma appear, the cancer is already in its terminal stage. That is what makes mesothelioma absolutely and definitely deadly.
